Svetlana Ukraintseva, PhD

Senior Research Scientist, Social Science Research Institute

I majored in biology and genetics at Moscow State University. My PhD was in genetic epidemiology of age-associated diseases, and my postdoctoral research at Max Planck Institute (Germany) addressed the relationships between aging and cancer risk from various perspectives: epidemiology, genetics, and bio-demography. Major focus of my current research is on mechanisms of human aging, and the complex relationships among aging, health and longevity. Having diverse backgrounds and solid experience in biology, genetics, bio-demography and epidemiology, allows me to apply an integrative approach to studying this fascinating and challenging topic. My particular research interests include: (i) Common and unique genetic (and non-genetic) factors regulating aging and health decline in humans. (ii) Polygenic and pleiotropic genetic effects (including trade-offs) playing role in aging and health, and their contribution to longevity. (iii) Influence of age, place and time on manifestation of genetic effects on aging, health and longevity traits.
